There are numerous theories about the origin of "fado". Some historians trace its origins to the some ancient Moorish influence or to the Medieval influences of "cantigas de amigo" (song of a friend), and the chants of Africans sailing at sea, but none is conclusive. The name "fado" comes from the Latin fatum (fate)." Fado" music is a form of Portuguese singing that is often associated with pubs, cafés, and restaurants. It is known for how expressive and profoundly melancholic it is. "Fado" appeared during the early 19th century in Lisbon, and is believed to have its origins in the port districts such as Alfama, Mouraria and Bairro Alto. It possibly evolved and formed, from a mixture of several older musical genres.
