Similar to why most Latin Americans speak Spanish and why other some African countries speak French, the answer is colonialism. As early as the 1400s, Portugal began to explore and later occupy large territories in Africa, including what is now known as Angola, Mozambique, São Tomé, and Cape Verde. The 1885 Berlin Conference formalized the imperialism in Africa perpetrated by the British, French, Portuguese, and others. It wasn't until the 1970s that simultaneous unrest in mainland and colonial Portugal finally resulted in the liberation of these territories.
