There are two ways I would approach this. One is going to display heads-up display (enable) polycount. This allows you first to see how many vertices etc are selected on your model. This is very useful.
After that, I would double-click your selection tools and enable the select camera-based selection. I would then switch to an orthographic view ideally and select it should allow you to only select the front vertices.
You can also convert your selection. You can select the face and then hold cntrl right click and go to convert selection to vertices.
