Anyone else has trouble with coloring?

I know I'm not gonna be an expert right off the bat, it's just the whole entire coloring process doesn't make sense to me. I'm about 10 weeks into school and learning about color levels etc. In the book make no sense. Also things like highlight placement is confusing. My first highlight didn't go great, got hot spots etc, went and did it again to the same person and it turned out better but still had hot spots. I colored my friend's hair and it just turned out too dark and I'm going back in with some balyage to brighten it up this weekend. Any tips would be so welcome!

First rule of thumb when doing color is always lean towards a lighter level because you can always make it darker. It is more difficult and time consuming to correct too dark of a color, not to mention costly.

Also look into investing into a color wheel. The can be found on Amazon.com. or an art supply store.
