Started learning ASL and I'm having trouble with with my ability to make some signs.

For M, do I need some of the tip of my thumb sticking out from under the three fingers or will it work if I force my pinky down? For W/6, I can't seem to keep my thumb on my pinky and fully extend my ring finger. I either curl both my ring and pinky finger or they both extend fully. Would it still be understood as W/6 if I point my pinky forward? Can I gain the dexterity in my hands to do the signs correctly through practice?
