Question about growing out my hair?

So I’m a young male, and I’m currently trying to grow my hair out long so I have almost a feminine style. I’ve had a crew cut my entire life, so I want to do this to change up how people see me. Right now it’s in an awkward stage between being short and long, and I have no idea how to control it. Whenever I wash my hair with shampoo and conditioner, it gets super puffy and wavy and almost looks like an Afro (I’m white). If I wash it, then give it a day, it looks fine since it has some natural oils in it, but it’s still uncontrollably wavy. I also feel like the bangs are disproportionately long compared to my side hair, and while I can hide them by swooping them to the side, if I get hit with a blast of wind from the side I look like Donald trump with a full head of hair. I know I should go see a hair stylist, but this is actually my second time growing out my hair. The first time I tried to get my bangs cut back a bit and it “cleaned up a tiny bit” and the woman gave me such a bad haircut I had to tell her to shave it all off and give me a crew cut. Do you think this was a stylist problem, or should I just tough it out and wait till my hair grows long naturally?
