I have a severe speech impediment and I am considering learning ASL as another way to communicate.

I have a speech impediment and I have had it as long as I can remember. In the past it hasn't bothered me so much, because I was young and mostly unaware that I was stuttering. It is mostly trouble pronouncing certain syllables or sounds, specifically those of the letters D, T, B, S, M, K, and probably a few others. Now, I am 18 years old and it has gotten out of control. My speech impediment does not allow me to speak fluently, often frustrating not only me but the other person as well. Often, I can't speak at all. I'm considering learning ASL as another method of communication. I've thought about just not talking and going "mute" in the past, but especially now I'm considering it more than ever. I took speech therapy, both with my local elementary school and with multiple private pathologists, for four years or more (I don't remember specifically) as a child, and it didn't help at all. I still remember the methods I was taught. Is it a good idea to learn sign language? I'd love to able to communicate and ASL seems like a good option. Please, send me whatever input you may have. It's greatly appreciated. **tl;dr** read title **edit:** Thank you all so much for the input! I feel so much better and I have a feeling I might be on the right track.
