Portuguese and Galician are very similar in terms of grammar structures and pronunciation. Intelligent speakers of either language would have an easy time understanding other speakers. They are considered separate languages primarily becase they have evolved under separate political jurisdictions. Another pair of languages that share a fairly similar relationship are Romanian (spoken in Romania) and Moldavian (spoken in Moldova).
How different are Portuguese and Galician and are they mutually intelligible and when did they become separate languages?
