Hi S.E.
What is the "DIFFERENCE" in math means to subtract 8 3/7 - 7 4/6
To add or subtract with fractions, a common denominator is needed.
To get a single, common denominator, need to change each of these out of a "mixed number" and into a singe, useful fraction.
So 8 3/7 = 8*7 +3 = 59/7
and
7 4/6 = 7 2/3 = 7*3 +2 = 23/3
So now the problem becomes 59/7 - 23/3
The common denominator here is 7*3 = 21, so multiply the first fraction by (3/3) to get a denom of 21. And multiply the second fraction by (7/7) to get a denom of 21
59(3)/7(3) =177/21
23(7)/(3(7) = 161/21
Now you have a common denominator, so concentrate on the top (numerator).
(177 - 161)/21 = 16/21
The difference between these two distances is 16/21 km. (approx 0.7619 km)
