The early Middle Ages were a period of decline of Western Civilization and a lapse into barbarism, i.e. the Dark Ages.  The rebirth of classical learning came with the Renaissance, after the Middle Ages, followed by the Age of Reason, also called the Enlightenment.  We can say the Middle Ages were a low point, and the high point came centuries later.
