Amy's model train is set up on a circular track. There are six telphone poles evenly placed around the track. It takes the engine of her train 12 seconds to go from the first pole to the third pole. How long would it take for the engine to go the entire distance around the track?

Since there are six poles in total, going from the first to the third pole represents 1/3 of the complete circle: (6 poles/circle)/(2 poles)= 1/3 circle

 

Therefore, given that 12 seconds covers 1/3 of the full circle, the full trip is covered in 12*3=36 seconds
