How far is the Willis Tower, (-6,-3), from Navy Pier (10,9) given that each unit is approximately 1/8 mile?

 

d = √(x2 - x1)^2 + (y2 -1)^2

 

= (10 - (-6)) + (9-(-3))^2

 

=  (4)^2 + (12)^2

 

=  16  + 144 =   √160 

 

=  1/8 of 160 =  1.5813883  

 

=  round to the nearest tenth  =  1.6 tenth of a mile

next step should be

16^2+12^2, not = (4)^2 + (12)^2

so

=16^2+12^2

=256+144=400

√400=20

20*1/8=2.5 mile
