decimal to fraction

Question

my problem is 806/28 I have 28.78571 as an answer ...but what I don't fully understand is how EXACTLY I can turn that into 28 11/14 I asked a question similar to this before but it was a repeating decimal and I thought I understood the topic but I am stuck once again. By the way I am just studying math on my own out of a old book I found. This is not homework..I am a grandmother that hopes to be able to help out the kids with math someday. Thanks

I'm not sure if this is going to help but your decimal is a strange repeating decimal. if you just looked at it on the calculator, you might not have noticed because it has a 6 digit repition. It is 28.785714285714285714285714285 . The repition does not include the digit in the tenths place, but rather starts in the 100ths column.

.5342222222222

 

the point is, the repition does not have to start at the decimal point.

You won't solve this one with your calculator!

 

We need to reduce the fraction and employ good old long division

 

806/28 = 403/14

 

Now :

 

                  28  

        14 ⌈ 403

              -28 

               123

              -112 

                 11

so our remainder is 11 and our answer then is 28 11/14
