Question y=3x² -12x + 7

Hello, I did this question from my homework and got it slightly wrong. I checked it over multiple times but still don't know what I screwed up.

Question y=3x² -12x + 7 Complete the Square

Here is what I did:

I used the formula -b/2a to figure out what x is. Here -b/2a is -1x-12/2x3 which is 12/6. 12÷6=2 so x=2. Then I plugged it in.

y=3(2)² -12(2) + 7

y=12 -24 +7

y=-5

Now that I had x and y I put it into vertex form, how the answers are supposed to appear.

y= 3(x-2)²-5 My final answer.

The answer in the book was y= 3(x-2)²+3

What did I do wrong?

Bobosharif S.

Without looking in details how you but it seems  to me that your final answer is correct
3(x-2)2-5=3(x2-4x+4)-5=3x2-12x+7

Jean-Luc, simply plug in x=0 in the original equation and in the different possible answers. The correct equation should get you the same y-value, whether it's in Standard Form or Vertex Form!

Yes, printed books have errors from time to time!  (And it looks like my first attempt had the exact same error as the book!)

Arturo, check the third to last line. You did not add b2/(4a) to both sides.

Mark, on the third line, you actually want to put +4 in the parentheses, so that would result in -12 on the outside, and ultimately give you the exact same thing that Jean-Luc got. y = 3(x-2)²-5

I understand that the x2 was a mistake at the end. Just to be clear, I'm saying that the +2 that you add in should be a +4.
(x-2)2 ≠ x2-4x+2
(x-2)2 = x2-4x+4
