suppose that these numbers are x and x+2 (two consecutive even integers).
Then the words say that x2 + (x+2)2 = 244. That should be clear.
Next, square the binomial (be sure to get three terms), combine like terms, and put all terms on the left side, setting the right side to zero.
Just an ordinary quadratic equation. Possibly you can solve by factoring. You may get two answers; accept any answer where x is an even integer.
Nothing special about this problem...but you must be confident to jump in and solve quadratic equations.
(The reason that you should be able to solve by factoring is because the answer is supposed to be an integer.)

Thank you, Lily. I appreciate the courtesy of your reply, and I also am glad that you are able to complete the work yourself. My philosophy is to give guidance, but not to do all of the work for students, when the problem fits into what I consider the 'mainstream' of the math curriculum. Good job!
