Populists focused on free coinage of silver to help farmers get out of debt, government ownership of railroads and communications to stop abuse of farmers and consumers because of high charges for shipping goods. They also wanted direct election of US Senators and a graduated income tax. The last two items became Amendments to the Constitution during the Progressive Era.
