Find the particular element of interest in the periodic table. Locate the atomic number. It will be the smaller of the two numbers listed next to the element. This is the number of protons. Subtract this number from the larger number (atomic mass). This will be the number of neutrons. Example: Carbon (C) has atomic number 6 and atomic mass 12.011. It has 6 protons and 6 neutrons (the 12.011 is rounded to 12). Another less obvious example is bromine (Br). It has atomic number 35 and atomic mass 80 (rounded from 79.9). Bromine has 35 protons and 45 neutrons. Hope this helps.
