Divide the total number of instructions by the number of instructions performed per second. That gives you the total time required in seconds.
t = (1.8 x 1010 instructions) / (4.5 x 102 instructions/second) = 4 x 107 seconds

I agree with you, David. But the problem statement gave 4.5 x 102 instructions per second, and I worked the problem as stated. Perhaps the student meant to say 4.5 x 1012 instructions per second?
