This is the difference in the units place.  Then in tenths place, we have to turn the 0 into a 9 because that zero is read as a 10.

This is the difference in the next place value.

 

 

Repeat in the next column. 

 

9 - 6 = 3

 

 

In the final column,

 

1 - 1 = 0

 

So the change receive is  $3.97
