There are two types of mechanical friction: 1) static friction and 2) kinetic friction. Static friction occurs between an object and a surface before the object starts moving. When you apply a force, the force must first overcome the static friction before the object will move. Once it's moving, the friction between an object and surface is called kinetic friction.
