Hi Cassie,

It's just a compound sentence.  "In the winter the temperatures dip below zero." is an independent sentence.  "Many people vacation in warmer climates." is also an independent sentence.  These two sentences are connected by the conjunction "so".

 

compound sentence conjunctions are: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so

 

"in the winter" in a prepositional time phrase, not a clause.
