On Tuesday Abhasra bought ten boxes. On Wednesday half of all the boxes that she had were destroyed. On Thursday there were only 25 left. How many did she have on Monday?

Let X = the number of boxes on Monday.  Now let's translate the English into math. . .

 

ten more boxes on Tuesday--> X + 10

 

half the boxes destroyed on Wednesday--> (X + 10)/2

 

25 left on Thursday--> 25 = (X + 10)/2

 

Cross multiply--> X + 10 = 50

 

Subtract 10 from both sides--> X = 40

 

Plug 40 back into the question to see if it works!
