A foreign intelligentsia influenced greatly the rollout of these dreadful events (notably Frederick 2 of Prussia, Adam Weishaupt & Andrew Michael Ramsay). The french gentry (lawers, judges, traders) were becoming powerful with their new weapons (finance, philosophical lobbies) and managed to change the law. As a result, the french crown weakened. The aristocratie (in Versailles, but not so much in Province) lost legitimacy. The third estate mostly living in the country side had very little knowledge of what was going on at the time. It was all happening in Paris among small groups. Though targeting the same goal (to establish the Republique), lots of revolutionaries ended up beheaded, which led me to think that the master puppet of the revolution might have been the devil himself.
