The equation you get from "the output of a function is 6 less than 3 times the input" is:  y = 3x - 6. So, when you are asked to find an equation "to find the input when the output is -3", you write: -3 = 3x - 6 and solve for the input, x. Undo the order of operations by first adding 6, then dividing by 3. You get: x = 1!
