As Justin says, gradient, in most cases, is the same as slope. The equation is in slope-intercept form:

y = mx + b, where m is the slope.

 

Therefore, for this equation, the slope (gradient) is 4/1.

For reasons beyond high-school math, this question is troubling (although not difficult).  Tell your teacher to save the multivariable calculus terms for situations where their application is warranted, and for students with the necessary background.

 

I agree with Mark and Justin that your teacher means "slope", and Mark's answer is golden.  Just for fun, ask your teacher which direction the gradient vector is oriented in (correct answer is parallel to the x-axis).

I find this question strange. Typically, you only talk about gradients in higher dimensional spaces since the gradient for a line reduces to its derivative in the 2 dimensional plane.
