If M = money Mindy had then

 

(1/5)M = 12   since she spent $12 on food and that was 1/5 of her money

 

(1/5)M = 12

multiply both sides by 5

M = $60

 

Mindy had a total of $60 at the beginning

 

After spending the 12 she had 60-12 = $48 left

 

Mindy spent 3/4 of the remaining $48 on books

(3/4)(48) = 3(12) = $36

 

Mindy spent $36 on books
