About Xavier

"It is easier to build strong children...than to repair broken men." - Frederick Douglass.

As a certified math teacher with KIPP Houston, an experienced tutor with Rice University, and a former college athlete, I aim to incite intellectual confidence, while driving students toward academic excellence, as will be defined by their tailored tutoring program. As a Houston native, graduate of the Kinkaid School, and a first-generation college student, I attribute most of my successes to passionate teachers and some foundational ethics instilled by my late grandmother, my mother, and a host of adopted parents. I also have two older brothers, and one younger sister. I hold a Masters Degree in Education Policy, currently completing a Masters in Teaching, and have a background in education research/finance.

Teaching/coaching specialties: - K-8 Math, High School/College Essay Writing, Public Speaking, k-12/college sports training (all sports), adult physical fitness trainer. In tutoring math, I incorporate various learning methods that include, but are not limited to: manipulatives, math models, memory methods, pneumonic devices, role-play, electronic representations, real-world applications. I understand students learn differently and my goal is help each child realize their own learning styles, so they can be self-sufficient in the classroom. Finally, I believe ALL students CAN learn, and I will do my absolute best to ensure that all of my students experience exponential growth both academically and in their intrinsic motivation.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary Math

I am currently a 5th grade math teacher and certified to teach up to 8th grade in all subjects. Additionally, I have tutored students as young as 3rd grade in math.

Football

As a standout athlete in high school, I withdrew my commitment to D1 and opted to pursue a more academic/athletic balance. I played football in college, help start a sports training company, and currently coach football and basketball, while teaching.

General Computer

In addition to completing 2 years of computer programing, I have also taught pre-teen and adult-aged professionals how to successfully, efficiently use computers to further their personal, professional, and academic goals. These services include, but are not limited to the following: online sales, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Flash ,BB EDIT, computer apps, Internet services, device security, social media management, etc.

Public Speaking

With a certification in Public Speaking and more than 10 years of experience, I have delivered/facilitated more than 70 public addresses, including college keynote speeches, high school public forums, and special guest appearances for elementary schools. Additionally, I have presented educational/legal/financial research studies at tier one research institutions and facilitated more than 20 community conversations in 4 different cities on issues that include, but are not limited to, politics, race, education, college relationships, athletics. Finally, I took part in debate while in college, achieved a GPA of 4.0 in ALL public speaking coursework and spent a summer training research STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) students on public speaking/presentation techniques prior to presenting their innovative research proposals to University officials and the public community.

STAAR

As a Texas certified teacher, I have extensive knowledge and understanding of STAAR tests, especially Math (my core teaching subject). Using the test question layout, my content knowledge, along with simple testing strategies, I aim to exponentially increase a student's opportunity to not only pass STAAR, but to conquer it.

Study Skills

As an undergraduate at a tier 1 research university, I took 4 different courses designed to increase student performance by perfecting optimal study/organizational habits. Additionally, over a 4 year period, I volunteered on weekends to tutor students in grades 6-12 on skills that included study habits. Finally, as an involved member of my college community and the local community, I have co-facilitated multiple seminars on how to increase student performance through changing their organizational skills. Using physical, pre-made organizational tools, I aim to increase student awareness of their own preferred study methods in grades 5-12 and college aged students.
