With over twenty years of experience tutoring AP and other levels of World, American, European, Art History and French, I have helped my students achieve academic success and score well on exams. I teach students to study more efficiently and become confident in their abilities. Being passionate about my work, I strive to make every session interesting as well as memorable. After initially speaking with a parent or guardian about their student's specific challenges, I adapt my tutoring accordingly. After working with me, students finish their courses with at least one letter grade higher. I plan for each tutoring session in advance, and I provide materials to enhance a student's understanding of the material. In addition, I am available for quick questions by telephone, text and email outside of our meetings at no charge.

For students who need to improve their writing skills, comprehension of literature, and/or grammar, I assess their skills and proceed methodically to teach each student accordingly to their level. Although I love to read, I understand many students do not share this passion. If a student needs help understanding a novel, play or other work of literature, I have extensive experience in this area also.

I graduated from the College of William and Mary in Virginia. I empathize with my students' challenges. I try to structure each tutoring session in such a way that the student can learn the material at his or her own pace and feel free to ask questions along the way.

Having studied and worked in France, I can teach any level of French. I have an appreciation of the difficulties one faces in learning a foreign language, so I am very patient and encouraging. I help students through the challenges of French grammar, and teach them strategies for learning vocabulary. Why do I tutor? I prefer working one-on-one because it helps a student stay focused on the lesson and gives them the opportunity to have their specific questions and/or difficulties addressed with patience and empathy.

History

American History,

American History

I have taught hundreds of AP and other US History students over the years. In addition to having received a Minor in American History from the College of William and Mary, I have extensive experience teaching and tutoring the AP US History curriculum and preparing students for the AP Exam. AP US History requires critical historical thinking skills, the ability to analyze primary and secondary sources, and advanced writing skills. In order to do well on this exam, one must write organized essays (DBQs, LEQs, SAQs) that follow a specific AP rubric. Not only do I help my students develop these skills, but I also teach them how to read closely and annotate their textbooks. As a result, my students perform better on quizzes and tests throughout the year.

Exceptionally well prepared and good humored.

With less than a day’s notice, Kathy had reviewed my son’s summer study guide in depth and prepared a session to provide foundation as he heads into the coming year. We have already scheduled his next session.

Fabulous French Tutor!

I have been working with Kathy for a little over a year! She has helped me tremendously with French grammar and pronunciation and all of the different ways that the French say things differently from English speakers. I have really progressed in my fluency thanks to Kathy's help. Kathy is positive and encouraging and makes learning French fun.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor

Katherine is very through in her pre-tutoring interview and is able to pinpoint the areas to focus on. She is fully prepared with materials and is extremely knowledgeable. Highly recommend

Knowledgeable, structured, and focused on having an impact.

Kathy reached out for a 15 minute parent/student/teacher call to put together a study plan to make the most out of her limited time with our son. I find her to be extremely communicative which is good for accountability. Our son has stated that he learns so much during her lessons - impressive since he’s normally a quiet kid.

Great Lesson

I'd a great lesson with Kathy! She made learning about French authors very interesting and we tackled the areas of French I'd like to work on first. She was pleasant to work with!

Excellent tutor

Katherine was helping me write two essays for my history class in college I once had trouble understanding. Very knowledgeable and simply masterful at explaining the topics. Thank you!

Kathy helped my daughter understand American history.

Kathy helped my daughter study and work through an American history course that was very challenging, addressing both an immediate need for better study/test preparation as well as some maintenance on digesting the material on a weekly basis. Kathy is very, very knowledgeable on the subject matter and was also very familiar with the textbook we used. As time progressed, not only did my daughter's grade rise, but also her confidence in handling the course increased. Kathy is definitely interested in the student's progress. Kathy always came prepared, and also worked with my daughter on strategies for improving work/study in heavy content-based courses such as this.
