Houston native, born and raised! I have a degree in English Literature with a minor in World Cultures and Literatures from the University of Houston. I went from a high school graduate at the bottom of the third quarter to a Magna Cum Laude university graduate, simply because I applied myself to the task and taught myself study skills I'd never had in high school. I pass on those same skills to my students and continue to apply them in my own work as a tutor: I work to stay a step ahead of my students, read as much of the material my students are reading as I can. I also routinely create new lessons tailored to students' specific needs.
My methods and assignments for teaching reading, writing, grammar and vocabulary are my own invention, developed through years of observation and experience to fill in the gaps created by test-driven curriculum and conventional worksheets.
I believe that doing well in verbal subjects requires a balance of two factors: 1, understanding what the teachers want and giving it to them ("Give the people what they want", I often say), and 2, figuring out what you, the student, have to say about a subject. Have an opinion! Then you combine your thoughts with the teacher's expectations in a thoughtful, logical sequence. Sound difficult? It's really not! I'm here to show you how to make that happen. And once you learn it, you might not even need me anymore...and I'm okay with that. My way is to teach students how to fish rather than do the fishing for them. I believe this approach to teaching, as well as reliability and ability to work with diverse personalities, is what makes me a client favorite.
I've found that when it comes to tutoring, there are as many student goals as there are students. Everyone is different: A football player who must maintain a B in English but can't make heads or tails of Pride and Prejudice...a valedictorian used to succeeding through sheer determination, but scared to death she doesn't have anything worthy to say in her personal statement to her dream col

Excellent tutor and very easy to work with.
Lisa is an excellent tutor. She is always on time and very well prepared. She is very knowledgeable in her subjects. She tailors her lessons around my son's learning style. She keeps him engaged during the lessons. He has learned to work smarter, not harder and has become more efficient. She is very easy to work with and I would highly recommend her to anyone! We have referred friends who have also had excellent results and positive experiences with her.Brigitte, 225 lessons with Lisa
knowledgeable and encouraging tutor
Lisa worked with my son for almost 2 months to prepare him for the ISEE test. She was very knowledgeable, encouraging, and easy to work with. She even had homework for him between lessons which I loved. My son is well prepared and feels so much more confident after working with Lisa.Danielle, 6 lessons with Lisa
Engaging and connected tutor
Lisa connected with my daughter, who is zoom-weary already and was reluctant to add more at home schoolwork. She found common ground with her and soon I heard engaging conversation and laughter! She tailored her style to what I knew my daughter needed and to what she learned in their first session.AMY, 2 lessons with Lisa

Creative and patient tutor
Lisa motivated student to express his feeling, view and vision through writing. I am very glad that she can be my son's tutor. In the past few weeks, my son has progressed a lot from a free style writer into a more rational, yet focused writer.
