I graduated with a 3.19 GPA and earned a Bachelor of Arts in English from Oregon State University. I'm currently about two-thirds of the way through my Master of Arts in Teaching Secondary English from Western Governors University. I have spent a year working as a homeschool tutor for a private family with four children, ages 8 to 16. In addition to that, I have worked as a tutor locally for the last 3 years, focusing specifically on English reading and writing. This fall, I will complete my student teaching and then start my career as a high school English teacher.
As a tutor, I like to ensure that my approach is fun and upbeat. In my experience, this leads to better student engagement and, thus, better retention. While I am more than capable of tutoring ages younger than 14, I excel at teaching at the high school level. At that age, students are typically more equipped to engage in the kinds of thoughtful, analytical conversations about literature and writing that I find most rewarding. They're beginning to form their own perspectives and can handle more complex ideals, which allows us to dig deeper, explore nuanced interpretations of the texts, and refine their work with a greater sense of their personal style and voice.
In addition, I have a special interest in teaching students how to write academically for different subjects, with an emphasis on researching, fact-checking, and citing sources. It's incredibly important to me that my students know how to find the best information and properly incorporate it into their work. I believe it leads to a greater sense of purpose in their writing, while also preparing them for life outside of the classroom.
