About Janet

I have been helping students prepare for and get excellent scores on the LSAT, GMAT, and MCAT (Verbal Reasoning/CARS) for more than ten years. During that time, I have helped hundreds of students get the scores they needed to get into some of the best professional schools in the country.

Personalized test prep is by far the most efficient and effective method of preparing for these challenging exams. All of our one-on-one sessions will be customized to YOUR personal needs, which maximizes your return on investment of both time and money.

I have taught for several of the most popular test prep companies - I know their methods and I am very familiar with their materials. Over time, I have developed methods that are simpler and faster, and that bring better results. Most importantly, I have the expertise to identify and teach the methods that best match each individual student's learning style. In this way, you are certain to practice and master the strategies and techniques that will help YOU succeed.

FREE FIRST SESSION: I offer a free first session (usually around 60 minutes). This is primarily a needs assessment session where we can get to know each other a bit and discuss your goals, needs, schedule, and budget. It's also an opportunity to sample my teaching methods and to evaluate whether we're a good fit for working together.

CLASS SIZE: One (you!). I'm also willing to do small group classes if you have one or more friends who are prepping for the same test. Although my hourly rate is slightly higher for small group classes, the cost per person goes down quite a bit, which makes this a very affordable option.

BOOKS and MATERIALS: I have a large library of test prep materials we can use for your sessions, all of which are current and reflect the most recent updates to any of the tests. You'll probably want to buy one or two books of your own (I can make recommendations), and we can certainly use any materials you have already purchased, but there will be no need for you to spend loads of cash on books just for test prep.

LOCATION: I meet most of my students in a public location such as a library or cafe, but we can also meet at your home or workplace, or we can do our sessions online. Another option is that I have a private classroom space available in my home. This space works well for individual and small group classes alike.

I am confident that I can help you maximize your potential and get your personal best score. Please contact me if you'd like to schedule a free first session and/or if you have any questions.

Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

GMAT

I have been helping students prepare for and get excellent scores on the GMAT for more than ten years. During that time, I have helped hundreds of students get the scores they needed to get into some of the best business schools and programs in the country.

There are a lot of GMAT tutors out there, so why should you choose me?

I scored very well on the GMAT, but I'm a teacher and tutor first. My expertise is in helping you maximize both your understanding and your score. My approach is friendly and personable, but also efficient and effective. I will help you build your confidence while we also enhance your skills.

One of my specialties is working with non-native English speakers. Let's face it - the GMAT is a tough exam for almost anyone, but there are added challenges for people who do not speak English as a native language. I taught English as a Second Language for eight years and I bring all of that knowledge to help you beat the GMAT!

One of my unique strengths is being able to figure out which of your test challenges are related to *content* and which are related to *strategy* or approach. Then we address those challenges in a methodical manner, moving you closer and closer to your full potential.

I offer a free consultation where we can discuss your goals and needs in detail, and I can demo some of my tutoring techniques. This will also give us a chance to determine whether we're a good fit for working together. Feel free to reach out to me here via the WyzAnt messaging system and let's start our conversation today!

GRE

I have been helping students prepare for and get excellent scores on the GRE for more than ten years. During that time, I have helped hundreds of students get the scores they needed to get into some of the best graduate schools and programs in the country.

IELTS

I hold an MS degree in Adult Education and a Graduate Certificate in TESOL. I have been working as an ESL/ESOL teacher and tutor for many years. The vast majority of my ratings and hours here on Wyzant are from ESL students, and I have student reviews related to both IELTS and TOEFL. I am extremely familiar with the content and skills that are assessed on the IELTS, and I have a large library of IELTS prep materials that we can use for tutoring sessions.

LSAT

I have been helping students prepare for and get excellent scores on the LSAT for more than ten years. During that time, I have helped hundreds of students get the scores they needed to get into some of the best law schools and programs in the country. There are a lot of LSAT tutors out there, so why should you choose me?

I truly LOVE tutoring for the LSAT, and I bring this positive attitude to each and every session. You might not ever join me in thinking that Logic Games are fun, but my enthusiasm guarantees you a tutor who will leave no stone unturned as we work together to maximize your score.

MCAT

My tutoring expertise related to MCAT preparation focuses primarily on these two sections: Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills, and Psychological, Social and Biological Foundations of Behavior. Over the past 12 years, I have helped more than 100 native and non-native English speakers obtain the scores they needed on these sections of the MCAT exam (previously the Verbal Reasoning section).

I can also assist with the science sections, as I am familiar with these subjects, but my expertise can be leveraged best if you have a solid understanding of the content and primarily need help with test-taking strategies. I often work with MCAT students who know the science material quite well but still aren't scoring near their potential. If that describes you, I can definitely help!

Tutoring sessions will be customized to your specific needs. I have a library of test prep materials we can use to supplement any books or materials you might already own, and I stay up-to-date with the yearly changes in the exam structure and/or content.

Please note that I do charge a higher hourly rate for MCAT tutoring ($75/hour).

TOEFL

In addition to teaching and tutoring adult English and ESL, I have specific experience helping students prepare for the TOEFL exam. I have successfully helped several students achieve composite TOEFL scores above 100 on the IBT exam.

The TOEFL exam tests English reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills with a focus on academic/collegiate topics and situations. My customized approach to TOEFL preparation begins with an assessment to help identify the student's current strengths and areas for improvement. We then systematically work on a combination of language skills and test-taking skills so that the student feels confident and prepared for all sections of the TOEFL exam.

Writing

I have been helping students research, organize and write academic and professional papers for more than 20 years. During that time, I have helped hundreds of students complete tough writing assignments and tasks. Specifically, I have effectively tutored students through essays and papers for community college and university classes, research projects (design and/or presentation), Masters Theses, dissertations, grant applications, white papers, a wide variety of business writing, blog entries, newsletters, and web page content.

There are a lot of writing tutors out there, so why should you choose me?

I write professionally for a variety of publications, but I'm a teacher and tutor first. My expertise is in helping you maximize both your understanding of good writing and your ability to produce it. My approach is friendly and personable, but also efficient and effective. I will help you build your confidence while we also enhance your skills. One of my specialties is working with non-native English speakers. Let's face it - writing assignments can be tough for almost anyone, but there are added challenges for people who do not speak English as a native language. I taught English as a Second Language for eight years and I bring all of that knowledge to help you create your best writing ever!

One of my unique strengths is being able to figure out which of your writing challenges are related to style and which are related to organization. Then we address those challenges in a methodical manner, moving you closer and closer to your full potential.

Quick and efficient

I met with Janet once and she was able to easily hone in on the mistakes that were hurting my score the most, and taught me steps on how to improve. I noticed immediate result after our session.
