About Janet

I have been helping students prepare for and get excellent scores on the LSAT, GMAT, and MCAT (Verbal Reasoning/CARS) for more than ten years. During that time, I have helped hundreds of students get the scores they needed to get into some of the best professional schools in the country.

Personalized test prep is by far the most efficient and effective method of preparing for these challenging exams. All of our one-on-one sessions will be customized to YOUR personal needs, which maximizes your return on investment of both time and money.

I have taught for several of the most popular test prep companies - I know their methods and I am very familiar with their materials. Over time, I have developed methods that are simpler and faster, and that bring better results. Most importantly, I have the expertise to identify and teach the methods that best match each individual student's learning style. In this way, you are certain to practice and master the strategies and techniques that will help YOU succeed.

FREE FIRST SESSION: I offer a free first session (usually around 60 minutes). This is primarily a needs assessment session where we can get to know each other a bit and discuss your goals, needs, schedule, and budget. It's also an opportunity to sample my teaching methods and to evaluate whether we're a good fit for working together.

CLASS SIZE: One (you!). I'm also willing to do small group classes if you have one or more friends who are prepping for the same test. Although my hourly rate is slightly higher for small group classes, the cost per person goes down quite a bit, which makes this a very affordable option.

BOOKS and MATERIALS: I have a large library of test prep materials we can use for your sessions, all of which are current and reflect the most recent updates to any of the tests. You'll probably want to buy one or two books of your own (I can make recommendations), and we can certainly use any materials you have already purchased, but there will be no need for you to spend loads of cash on books just for test prep.

LOCATION: I meet most of my students in a public location such as a library or cafe, but we can also meet at your home or workplace, or we can do our sessions online. Another option is that I have a private classroom space available in my home. This space works well for individual and small group classes alike.

I am confident that I can help you maximize your potential and get your personal best score. Please contact me if you'd like to schedule a free first session and/or if you have any questions.

Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to working with you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ESL/ESOL

I hold a Master's degree in Adult Education from Portland State University. My Master's project involved developing a participatory approach to Adult ESOL.

I also hold a graduate certificate in Teaching English as a Second or Other Language (TESOL) from Seattle Pacific University.

I have been teaching adult ESL (paid and volunteer) for many years, and I have worked with students from all over the world. My experience includes students at all proficiency levels, from true beginners to TOEFL and business English students. I have taught several Level 1 and 2 adult ESOL groups at Portland Community College, and I own my own adult ESL tutoring practice (ESL PDX).

GMAT

Over the past 12 years I have helped more than 100 students (including non-native English speakers) get the scores they needed on the GMAT. My top specialty is Critical Reasoning, but I am extremely familiar and adept with all aspects and sections of this exam.

Tutoring sessions will be customized to meet your particular needs and learning style. I have a large library of test prep materials we can use to supplement any books or materials you might already own, and I stay up-to-date with the yearly changes in the exam structure and/or content. Use of my test prep materials is included in my hourly rate at no extra charge.

IELTS

I hold an MS degree in Adult Education and a Graduate Certificate in TESOL. I have been working as an ESL/ESOL teacher and tutor for many years. The vast majority of my ratings and hours here on Wyzant are from ESL students, and I have student reviews related to both IELTS and TOEFL. I am extremely familiar with the content and skills that are assessed on the IELTS, and I have a large library of IELTS prep materials that we can use for tutoring sessions.

LSAT

Over the past 12 years, I have helped more than 100 students (including non-native English speakers) obtain the scores they needed on the LSAT exam. Logic Games (Analytical Reasoning) and Logical Reasoning are my specialties, but I'm very familiar with the Reading Comprehension section as well.

Tutoring sessions will be customized to your specific needs. We can focus on specific sections of the test and/or types of questions, or we can cover the exam in its entirety. I have a large library of LSAT prep resources, and we will tap into whichever ones are the best choices for your particular needs, learning style, etc.

MCAT

My tutoring expertise related to MCAT preparation focuses primarily on these two sections: Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills, and Psychological, Social and Biological Foundations of Behavior. Over the past 12 years, I have helped more than 100 native and non-native English speakers obtain the scores they needed on these sections of the MCAT exam (previously the Verbal Reasoning section).

Tutoring sessions will be customized to your specific needs. I have a large library of test prep materials we can use to supplement any books or materials you might already own, and I stay up-to-date with the yearly changes in the exam structure and/or content.

Please note that I do charge a slightly higher hourly rate for MCAT tutoring ($65/hour).

TOEFL

In addition to teaching and tutoring adult English and ESL, I have specific experience helping students prepare for the TOEFL exam. I have successfully helped several students achieve composite TOEFL scores above 100 on the IBT exam.

The TOEFL exam tests English reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills with a focus on academic/collegiate topics and situations. My customized approach to TOEFL preparation begins with an assessment to help identify the student's current strengths and areas for improvement. We then systematically work on a combination of language skills and test-taking skills so that the student feels confident and prepared for all sections of the TOEFL exam.

Quick and efficient

I met with Janet once and she was able to easily hone in on the mistakes that were hurting my score the most, and taught me steps on how to improve. I noticed immediate result after our session.
