Hello! My name is Judy, and I love both teaching and learning languages. Hello! My name is Judy, and I love both teaching and learning languages. I majored in German as an undergraduate, and I lived in Germany for more than three years, both in the North (in the city of Kiel) and in the South (in Munich/Muenchen). I returned from Germany to the United States to earn my master's degree in teaching English as a second/foreign language. Over all, I have taught ESL (English as a Second Language) and German more than 10 years, in Germany, Central America, and the United States. I have taught and tutored students/clients ranging in ages from 16-80+, in a variety of settings: one-on-one, in small groups, at private universities, public universities, and refugee centers. In addition, I am also fluent in Spanish, after living more than two years with local families in Panama and Nicaragua.

I enjoy breaking down a language into easily understood chunks or blocks of information, so that my students/clients can solidly build on this information.

Probably the best story I can share regarding my language teaching/tutoring is the following:

While in Nicaragua, I adopted a nine-year-old boy, who moved back to the US with me. He didn't know a word of English before entering the third grade in the American school system. He was in a bilingual program for only one semester, when I enrolled him into an English-only classroom later that fall. His principal was against my transitioning him so soon, but I was confident about the work he and I were doing together at home. His fourth grade teacher said she had never seen a student transition so smoothly before, after only six months in a bilingual program. The hard work my son, Carlos, and I put into his mastering the English language "paid off," and it can for you too!

Finally, I am a public speaker and trainer and have a great deal of computer-related experience, including PowerPoint and Quickbooks. I have references for very satisfied bookkeeping clients that I would be happy to share with you.

I look forward to working with you and/or yo

I am able to show students the beginning level of Excel, including teaching the basics of spreadsheet terminology, navigating the various tabs, formatting - both on-screen and in printed form, summation, and simple formulas. After building, correcting and expanding databases that literally contained millions of cells of data, I am especially strong at pointing out advantages and disadvantages to collecting data in various formats, according to how the database will be used.

Public Speaking

I have a master's degree in how to teach English as a second/foreign language (ESL/EFL). One of the skill sets includes, of course, speaking. During my five+ years of teaching advanced ESL/EFL courses, particularly at the university level, I had to prepare students for their coursework, and this included public speaking. In addition, I was the training manager at a large public school district (70,000+ students) for the employees who maintained the schools. These employees trained the custodial staff on an on-going basis. In order for the employees to instruct the courses I helped develop, they had to complete a "Train-the-Trainer" program which I developed and taught. This course was an elementary public speaking class, which proved to be highly successful. Many of the employees stated that it my public speaking class was the most helpful part of the process of becoming an instructor.

I have a bachelor's degree in business administration, and I have been working part-time as a book keeper using QuickBooks Pro for the last three years. I have kept the books for individuals, as well as for small business owners. I would be happy to share a list of satisfied customers as references if you are interested. I have also been an educator for almost 20 years, and I bring a patient approach to my instruction/tutoring, even if it is to a topic that often causes people to "pull their hair out," namely, book keeping! :)

I have earned a master's degree in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) from St. Michael's College in Winooski, Vermont, earning a 4.0 and graduating with honors. For more than ten years, I have taught English to speakers of other languages in Munich, Germany; Panama City, Panama; Managua, Nicaragua; and in Winooski, Vermont, and Denver, Colorado. I have taught individuals in one-on-one settings, small groups, and larger classes. My students/clients have ranged in age from 16 to 80+. I love teaching complete beginners; however, I'm also experienced teaching advanced students preparing to take the TOEFL exam.

In addition to being fluent in German, I am also fluent in Spanish, after living more than two years with local families in Panama and Nicaragua in the mid-90s. I was hired in these two countries to open a language school and run the language department of a private university, since I have a master's degree in teaching English as a second language. I enjoy breaking down a language into easily understood chunks or blocks of information, so that my students/clients can solidly build on this information. I believe that people can only learn a language successfully if they feel comfortable enough to ask questions and make mistakes, without fear of judgement. Thus, establishing a warm, welcoming rapport is of utmost importance to me, regardless of the subject matter.

always a delight

I'm on a steep learning curve with QuickBooks, and Judy is patient, knowledgable, and wonderfully attuned to my needs in a customized way. Her expertise and experience as a teacher are obvious, and the playfulness and humor make it a pleasure to work.

Wonderful tutor!

Judy is working with our client to enhance his reading/writing/communication skills in Spanish/English. Her skill set is just what we needed and we are thrilled with her services so far.

QuickBooks guide

Judy has a very pleasant learning environment, has wi-fi connections for more than one laptop. I brought a bigger problem than either of us could solve during the training time, and we both learned more about QB online than what we set out to do. She was helpful, but my problem began before meeting her and it was bank-related. I've subsequently fixed that problem and may contact her again for further training time.

Great teacher for computer skills for a couple of seniors!

Judy is helping a couple of 70+ grandparents learn a bit about computers so we do not have to ask our children and grandchildren for help. First session was great, looking forward to our next one. Very easy to work with and we are learning a lot. Very much enjoy being pro active in our learning and Judy appears to be a great fit for us, would highly recommend.

Knowledgeable and patient tutor. She was a great help to clear up the questions I had with QuickBooks.

Judy helped me understand the dynamics of the QuickBooks Pro 2019 and how to fix errors. She gave me a clearer view of this program and how I should use it. You are the best! I can't even explain what a relief it was to ask the questions and get clear answers for each one. I couldn't have done it without her knowledge.

Great lesson - Looking forward to the next one!

Judy was very patient with my daughter. She help her organize her lessons and understand the concepts for the up coming test. She provided me with updates along the way; which is much appreciated. Thanks Judy!

Knowledgeable

She was very helpful and easy to understand. I would use her again if I ever need help with quickbooks and I recommend her services. I recommended having all your files organized beforehand because the time you spend looking for stuff can add to the hours spent not learning.

Taro, 9 lessons with Judy

Skillful teacher

Judy has many gifts as a teacher. Among them her ability to shift her teaching mode as the lesson progresses -- conversation, stopping to clarify grammar, working on readings or brief writing exercises. These all flow naturally as we work together. The lesson goes by astonishingly fast.
