About Anne

My tutoring experience spans 9 years, nearly 1000 hours with Wyzant students, and almost 4 times as many tutoring hours with students at The Portland Tutoring Collective. I have coached students to perfect 800s on all sections of the SAT, and high 30s on the ACT.

I specialize in the following subjects:
- SAT, ACT, and GRE test preparation
- Pre-algebra
- Algebra I/II
- Geometry
- Precalculus
- Biology

I enjoy tailoring my tutoring to the individual needs of each student. My students have attended public, private, charter, and home schools, and I have worked with students with various learning differences, including ADHD, processing delays, and dyslexia.

Here is a glowing testimonial!
(I have many others - Wyzant only lets us include one)

"Thank you for your wonderful help with both of our children- Catherine improved on her ACT test scores from a 19 to a 25; she received many great offers and chose University of Portland. With the scholarship she earned we are well below the cost of a state university.

Marty did even better; going from a 17 to a 25- he has now been accepted to all 8 of his schools - and has received offers totaling over $80,000.

We have one more for in a few years!! Your help and expertise has helped not only our children but us as well!"

More about me:
I have a bachelor's of science in molecular biology from the University of California, Davis, and completed two years of graduate studies in environmental microbiology at UC Santa Barbara. During college, I tutored fellow undergraduates in biology, biochemistry, and genetics. After my studies, I traveled to Central America and volunteered to help homeless teens living in a group home in Nicaragua.

After I left grad school for medical reasons, I discovered private tutoring was a great match for my skills, expertise, and passions. I truly enjoy working with students individually to help them surmount the many challenges school places in their paths.

I moved to Portland nine years ago, and I have been tutoring and teaching ever since. In addition to tutoring, I worked for the SUN program in Portland tutoring in their after-school program. I developed and taught the Magnificent Microbes and Introduction to Biotechnology class for Saturday Academy during the summers of 2009, 2010, and 2011. I also teach microbiology, forensic science, and marine biology for Saturday Academy and local elementary schools.

I am also an accomplished musician (voice, various instruments) and I would love to work with more students who are studying music theory and voice!

I look forward to working with your student! Please contact me if you have any questions.

NOTE: Due to increased interest in my services, I now offer tutoring services online or at my office in SW Portland near John's Landing. I do not travel to students' homes.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

To prepare for ACT english, we will review grammar rules and editing skills. Grammar skills include subject-verb agreement, punctuation, and word choice.
We will also discuss time-management and multiple choice strategies. I have tutored students in ACT and SAT test prep for over 9 years, and my students have made dramatic improvements (5-10 points) in the ACT english section.

ACT Math

I have taught several classes in SAT/ACT test prep, and I have helped over 30 students reach their goal scores.
I cover SAT/ACT math as well as strategies for the reading and writing sections. I also tutor academic math subjects - Prealgebra, Algebra, and Geometry.

ACT Reading

To prepare for ACT reading, we will review comprehension and time management skills. We will practice strategies for annotating reading passages, determining which questions to answer first, and time management strategies. I have enjoyed helping hundreds of students improve their test prep scores over the past 9 years.

ACT Science

To prepare for ACT science, we will review data analysis, reading comprehension, and time management skills. We will discuss different parts of the scientific method and the different types of questions you will encounter in the ACT science section. I am uniquely qualified to help students improve their ACT science scores since I majored in biology in undergraduate and graduate school.

Algebra I- solving multi-step variable equations, graphing, solving systems of equations, distributive property, relations and functions, identifying domain and range, inequalities, absolute value, quadratic function, simplifying radical numbers, rationalizing denominators, and so much more.

Algebra 2

Algebra II - solving equations and inequalities, graphing functions, manipulating algebraic powers and roots, complex and imaginary numbers, logarithms, conic sections, permutations and combinations, matrices, and much more.

Biology

I have a background and specialize in cell and molecular biology.

GED

I have helped several students pass their GED test. I specialize in reviewing math skills. On the GED, these include arithmetic, geometry, measurement, data analysis, and algebra. I am happy to help students who have been out of school for awhile.

I have tutored several students in the GRE and specialize in assisting students in the quantitative section. My background in academic math and test prep strategies for the SAT and ACT tests prepare me to tutor students in the GRE. I enjoy working with students who are heading off to graduate school!

Thanks For The Good Job, Anne!

Anne helped my son with his SAT prep, and helped with tips as well as day to day studying between the first time he took the SAT test and second test. We definitely give Anne credit for helping Bryce increase his SAT score by 260 points on the second test. Thanks again.
