About Verna

I am a recent graduate of the TESOL Certification program at Portland State University. I have tutored people of all ages in a variety of topics. My most recent tutoring job was with an adult who needed help in study skills, typing papers, computer skills, memorization methods, Human Biology, and chart making skills just to name a few.

I taught pronunciation/conversation English in Korea. I was a volunteer tutor at Clark College in Vancouver WA. I have been tutoring through WyzAnt for about 1 1/2 years. I specialize in pronunciation and conversation. I enjoy teaching and seeing the ah ha moment in the eyes of a student when they finally understand. I help students understand the differences between sounds and the correct technique to make these sounds. I have studied other languages however, from my experience one needs to practice these languages in order to maintain proficiency in speaking these languages.

I encourage anyone looking for a tutor who enjoys helping you succeed to contact me.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

While teaching in English in Korea, I also taught various Bible classes and taught Bible lessons to students wishing to learn about the Bible. Some of the themes which I chose where the Life of Christ, Biblical Beginning, How to Know Christ, and Bible Stories from the Old Testament. I value the time spent reading my Bible and find the Psalms a great comfort.

Drawing

I have a BA in Fine Art with an emphasize in studio art. While most of my tutoring has been in ESL or adult learning of various subjects, drawing and painting are in my heart. Art lends itself to specific hands-on learning which requires the knowledge of the materials being used by both the instructor and the student. Exploring various art techniques challenges the student to enjoy the materials. I would also use the local art galleries and museums as a means to learn from the masters.

English

I have taught English as a second language living abroad and continue to volunteer at Clark College in their ESL program. I hold a BA in Fine Arts, an MBA, and a TESOL Certificate.

ESL/ESOL

I taught ESL/EFL in Seoul Korea some years back. I volunteer tutor at Clark College in Clark County, Vancouver, WA. I recently finished my TESOL Certificate at Portland State University.

IELTS

As part of my TESOL Certification program through Portland State University, I tutored IELP students preparing for the IELTS. I am resourceful in gathering learning materials targeting the IELTS. My ongoing goal in teaching ESL/ESOL is to become certified in IELTS as I feel it will open additional doors to teach abroad.

Painting

Three of my oil paintings have won ribbons.

TOEFL

I hold a TESOL Certificate from Portland State University. While obtaining my certification I tutored students both for the TOEFL and the IELTS exams. My students I volunteer tutor at Clark College are studying for their citizenship to the USA or for one of these exams.

Vocabulary

While teaching ESL pronunciation/conversation I also teach vocabulary. I feel that having a good command of vocabulary words allows a student to feel more comfortable in speaking. Vocabulary building allows a person to not only practice the skills such as speaking/listening and reading/writing, but it also allows a person the ability to master the language at a more advanced level. This is my goal as I teach and/or tutor.
