About Hong

Graduating top of the class from the very best engineering university (ranked #1 in the world ahead of MIT, 2015 US News), I have studied quantum mechanics, computer science and statistics in greater depth, which enable me to appreciate the simplicity and intertwining of science from various angle.
I teach by asking questions to provoke active thinking instead of giving out answers. We together are engaged in very productive thought process. After initial session, strength/weakness will be identified and goal would be set. In the past three years, I have been successful in providing private and group lessons to over 300 students, from neighboring schools such as Ridge High, Mendham, Pingry, Newark Academy, Delbarton, Millburn, Far Hill Day School, Kent Place, Oratory Prep, UCMagnet, SCVTS, , Watchung Regional, Raritan High, New Providence, as far as Bergen Academies, The Lawrenceville School, Phillips Exeter Academy. Many students went on to score 5 on AP Calculus, AP Physics, AP Chem, AP Statistics and 800 on SAT math, chemistry and physics. Some of them earned prestigious scholarships such as Stamps Scholar. I also tutored dozens of college and graduate students from Princeton, UPenn, Cornell, Emory, CMU, UMichigan, Johns Hopkins, SUNY, Drew, Rutgers, Montclair on subjects such as Multivariable Calculus, Differential Equation, Gaming Theory, Statistics, Algorithm, College Physics and Physical Chemistry etc.

I am flexible, open to daytime or evening session. Group rate is available too. You have option for multiple subjects within same session. I always listen to your feedback carefully. I am confident that we will see improved grade and higher interest in short time. Science can be very rewarding and there is a better way to learn. Let's work together and NOW!

Hong replied on 2/8/2016

Andrea, thank you for your kind words. He is such a bright young man catching all the ideas so quickly. Armed with right concepts and mental training to visualize physics processes, he will be able to draw free body diagram easily and setup the right equations naturally.

"Very Knowledgeable"

"Wonderful tutor & person"

- Raouf, Mendham, NJ on 1/8/16
Hong replied on 1/11/2016

Thank you very much. I learned a lot just by walking into your house. A great pleasure and one of the reason I love tutoring.

"Very patient, responded to our email/phone call quite timely"

- David, East Hanover, NJ on 11/20/15
Hong replied on 11/20/2015

Thank you very much. Although I tutor college graduate level math, It's still very rare to see a high school junior taking advanced math class such as Ordinary Differential Equation. Very impressive kid. Pleasure is mine!

"Good tutor"

- Matt, Mendham, NJ on 11/6/15
Hong replied on 11/20/2015

Thank you. In physics, clear understanding of concepts and visualization of physics process is the most important part. Pay attention to disciplined approach in construction of free-body diagram so that one can set up the right equations naturally.

"Fantastic and impressive physics tutor"

- Liwen, Somerville, NJ on 3/5/15
Hong replied on 11/22/2015

Thank you. Not surprised to hear that your daughter starting to tutor her classmates on physics. Proud of her.

"Great tutor!"

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

SAT/ACT math is difficult because of the breadth of topics that it covers, not the depth. Mistakes often happen when students are not sure about the content of that particular question. It’s wrong to treat SAT as a trick test and try to game it by spending time to learn empty “techniques” commonly found on SAT-prep books.

Instead, my tutoring is focused on the content. Solidify your knowledge base first! Drawing from years of experience, I know exactly which topics are likely problematic and where the points are deducted. I provide review and exercises to strengthen students in those areas. As a result my students will go into the test with full confidence. Only by this way of preparation, they will remain calm throughout and won’t panic even after encountering 1 or 2 tough questions (that is when one starts to fall into trap and make careless mistakes). Prepare in the right way. Stay calm and carry on.

Algebra 1

Algebra 1 deals with basic mathematical operations, factorization, solving linear equation and graphing simple functions, which lays foundation to algebra 2 and precalculus. Struggling students usually lack the essential skills and proper technique to solve problems with speed and accuracy. Drawing from many years' experience, my teaching will concentrate in working on exercises together, clear the confusion, establish solid rules to iron out mistakes and instill confidence in accuracy then speed.

Algebra 2

Algebra deals with factorization, solving polynomial equation and graphing functions, which lays foundation to precalculus and physics. Struggling students usually lack the essential skills and proper technique to solve problems with speed and accuracy. Drawing from many years' experience, my teaching will concentrate in working on exercises together, clear the confusion, establish solid rules to iron out mistake and instill confidence in accuracy then speed.

Calculus

Building upon algebra, geometry, and calculus is the gateway to higher math and college physics. Struggling students usually fall into two categories: 1) weak foundation of algebra/geometry 2) simply overwhelmed by more complicated functions, new concepts in series/limits or the sheer number of differential and integral identities (all taught in a very fast pace).

My method: 1) Provide review of precalculus constantly. 2) Teach through visual methods, emphasizing construction and interpretation of graphs, so that students will have clear understanding of abstract concepts. 3)Together practice key differential/integral identities to improve speed and accuracy.

Chess

I coached my own son reaching top 5 rank nationally and qualified to represent USA in 2014 World Youth Chess Championship at South Africa.

Differential Equations

My M.S. degree from Univ of Notre Dame is in Quantum Mechanics, which is a subject that requires solving ordinary or partial differential equations routinely. I have also been a teaching assistant in graduate school for 6 years.

Geometry

Geometry requires different skill set. It's common that kids used to be good at algebra suddenly have difficulty here. Geometry demands spatial recognition and applying established rules (postulate/theorem) in deductive reasoning PLUS writing down your proof in clear logic order.
I first make sure students have a clear grasp on all the facts/rules established, then guide them to organize/write down thought process in a logical way. Finally I will teach them how to pick up the hidden clue that stronger players usually spot out intuitively. In geometry, the right intuition is the key.

Linear Algebra

My graduate degree at University of Notre Dame was on Quantum Mechanics, which requires solving differential equations routinely. In computer language, all differential equations are solved in matrix form, which is the subject of linear algebra. My research there was focused on implementation of new algorithm in C++ ( matrix and linear algebra).

SAT Math

SAT/ACT math is difficult because of the of topics that it covers, not the depth. Mistakes often happen when students are not sure about the content of that particular question. It’s wrong to treat SAT as a trick test and try to game it by spending time to learn empty “technique” commonly found on SAT-prep books.
