About Denise

Bio

Teaching high school is my second career. After working in industry for almost 20 years, I decided to change careers and help young people get as excited as I am over science. I have been teaching for 10 years now. I almost have enough credits for a second Masters degree!

My teaching experience includes working with students that have IEPs and learning disabilities all the way through to AP biology students. I love Biology and have taught that class ever year since starting teaching. I have also taught Comparative Anatomy, Geophysical Science (general chemistry/physics), Earth and Space Science, and Human Anatomy/Physiology. All high school level.

I am a firm believer in teaching students to the way they learn. I try to include oral, visual, and hands-on exercises so that the student can learn in the way they best understand.

Lastly, regarding standardized tests: I have attended conferences regarding NJ mandated standardized tests. I have proctored more state mandated tests than I prefer to recall. I wanted to note my experience with standardized tests. They are pretty much the same, no matter what the name is or who is administering it!

Biology is the study of life, and a core course in your high school curriculum. It focuses on basic to complex concepts which include: matter; energy and organization in living systems; diversity and biological evolution; reproduction and heredity; natural systems and interactions; and human interactions/impact. These concepts will be integrated with the content standards that highlight: Scientific Processes, Science and Society, Mathematical Applications, and the Nature/Process of Technology. High school biology classes are intended to prepare you for the NJBCT Biology Exam which is given in May of each school year. To date, this exam does not "count" - meaning students do not have to pass the test to graduate high school. It is the State of NJ's intention to make the test count eventually.

Knowledgeable, Easy to Relate and Patient

My daughter had her first Honors Bio lesson with Denise yesterday. We got very lucky - Denise is a kind of tutor one could only wish for - experienced, knowledgeable, patient, kind, with a sense of humor, who truly wants to help students to get better and understand concepts. Denise met with my daughter twice so far and she is already understanding bio better. My daughter said that she has a better grasp on the lessons that were previously taught in school. Denise did a good job teaching biology to my son. He was having trouble understanding the concepts in depth and she got him to delve deeper into the material.
