About Blair

My philosophy when it comes to tutoring is simple – learning effectively requires focus, determination and self-discipline. I provide ample direct & prompt feedback, can answer any questions, and will tailor my teaching tactics for each individual student's needs. As a graduate of Florida State University, I possess a Bachelor’s in Science in both Political Science and English. I attended graduate school at the University of Utah. Shortly thereafter, I returned to my hometown (Jacksonville) and obtained a teaching job at a very prestigious charter school. I taught English 3 & 4 Honors, Humanities Honors, SAT Preparation and Intensive Reading. I am certified to teach at any school in the state of Florida. I possess a breadth of knowledge concerning U.S. and World History, including International Conflict, Maritime Law, etc. I have an extensive background in English Literature (especially Early Modern English/Renaissance Drama, which includes Shakespeare and his contemporaries). I had the pleasure of playing the role of "Iris" (Goddess of the Rainbow) in Capital City Shakespeare's production of "The Tempest" while studying at FSU. I took several Advanced Creative Writing Workshops at FSU, where I learned specialized techniques in developing rhetorical skills and improving grammar and reading comprehension. I utilize classic Socratic techniques whilst tutoring to ensure that my students are truly learning, not simply memorizing or regurgitating information. My background in pedagogy is wide-ranging because I believe that one’s education is invaluable.

Services: I love working with students of all ages, backgrounds and learning abilities, as I believe the only two things required to improve one's studying habits and grades/test scores is a willingness to learn and an outstanding tutor/teacher. I am a proponent of positive reinforcement, and treating even the youngest of students like adults, as it begets adult-like behavior, in addition to facilitating development in learning. My familiarity with the subjects I have been trained to teach allows me to assist ANY student in studying skills/organization, including undergraduate and graduate students. I am also available for copy editing any piece of writing (essays, statements of purpose, creative writing, etc.) I am extremely passionate about both learning and teaching, and rendering results that encourage students to be the same.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Reading

ACT Comprehension is certainly one of my fortes. My score was a 34/36. Not only do I understand what the test is asking the student to complete in terms of content, I am very familiar with the format of the ACT.

Public Speaking

I am proficient in Lincoln-Douglas debate, formulating arguments by explaining the four components of an effective, structured argument (Claim, Analysis, Impact and Conclusion) and creating affirmative and negative constructives (cases) that are centered around a value premise and value criterion. Additionally, there are practices and procedures that help one refine their ability to speak extemporaneously, such as creating a logical guideline, repetition, and encouraging practicing speaking in front of groups of ten or more individuals. I permit strictly original arguments, and require students to provide cogent, reliable sources (which greatly builds one's ability to reference and create bibliographies in writing and research as well.) I was the President of my high school debate team during both my Junior and Senior years, ranked fifth in the state of Florida in 2005, attended the Victory Briefs Institute at UCLA in the summer of 2005, and was an active member of the NFL (National Forensics League) between 2003-2006.

Reading

I'm uniquely qualified to teach all of the components of reading effectively, as I am a licensed English teacher.

SAT Reading

I taught an SAT/ACT prep course last year (2014-2015) at a charter school, have extensive tutoring practice (see my reviews), and know the content & the format of the test(s) very well.

Writing

Writing is my forte. I'm able to copy-edit a range of research essays for college students, high school essays of any kind (I am a certified teacher in the state of Florida and have taught a variety of English courses). I'm extremely easy-going about teaching writing, which enables me to feel comfortable with lower level writing as well.

Whether you need assistance in how to plan an essay or you just need an essay you've already written to be edited, I feel confident that I could help you in augmenting your writing skills! ??
