I began tutoring in college after my father met Jaime Escalante. The movie, Stand and Deliver, about Mr. Escalante's success teaching calculus to inner city school students in Los Angeles resonated with me.
I believe that it is possible for anyone to learn about any topic as long as it is presented in a manner that is related to a person's life experience, and I used this approach as a tutor at King's College. In one instance, I taught calculus to a teammate using farm work and cars as the point of reference.
By my sophomore year, the tutoring office was referring students to me who were in danger of failing their classes. After I had an opportunity to work with them, all of the students passed their courses, and many of them did so with distinction. During my time at King's I had the opportunity to tutor students in algebra, calculus, biology, English, writing, and history.
In graduate school I became the Director of the largest student run science outreach organization in the U.S. at the time. Science Theatre, which at that time saw over 20,000 children annually, was invited to present their work at professional conferences, and received an award from the American Association for the Advancement of Science. This was a wonderful opportunity to help children and their families become excited about science, and it is also where I met my husband of 8 years.
In my capacity as Assistant Director of Science Theatre, I wrote the Ask Science Theatre column for the Lansing State Journal from 1997-1998. These were weekly articles that answered science questions submitted by children such as, "Why is the sky blue?" I also published my graduate research in a peer reviewed journal.
Locally, I am an adjunct faculty member and tutor for Medaille College. I teach writing and research courses for Medaille students who are enrolled in the associates, bachelor and graduate degree programs.
I enjoy teaching and tutoring people because it gives me an oppotunity to share some of my expertise with others in a creative way, while also, hopefully, getting them excited about a topic.
It is my hope that if you need help, and I am available, you will give me the opportunity to work with you. |
