Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I have studied global cultures as a part of my larger study of International Relations. My studies of indigenous peoples are complemented by my study of modern societies around the world, and my exposure to many different cultures has allowed me to study the differences in customs, traditions, languages, and all the myriad dimensions that make up a culture. I have taken college courses in Cultural Anthropology and written many papers on different facets of culture around the world, including gender roles, cultural narratives (oral and written), cultural responses to oppression, colonialism, and other topics. I have a profound interest in culture and believe that we can gain a great deal of knowledge about ourselves by studying own culture the same way that we study others.

College Counseling

I have many years of experience in essay writing and resume/application design. In addition to crafting essays, cover letters and resumes for myself, friends and family, I have also assisted tutoring students with the college application process as well as their search for jobs after graduation. I have helped to create successful essays and applications for private, SUNY, and community college applications. I have also helped to guide applicants in degree program selection, communication with college admissions staff and international admissions/immigration. I have worked with SEVIS and have experience with J-1 and F-1 visa students and their program requirements. I also have experience in recruiting international students for SUNY Brockport through presentations, tours, and published materials that I created. I also have extensive experience in persuasive writing and editing, so the college essay is my strongest subject.

Composition (Music)

I have experience in composing music in Sibelius, as well as by hand on paper. I have over a decade of musical experience and have taken college-level courses in music theory. I can sight-read, edit and evaluate compositions in order to help your student improve them.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have worked as a private tutor and nanny with many elementary and middle school-aged children for the last 10 years. I have experience with the Brighton, Fairport, Spencerport, Victor, Churchville-Chili, and Pittsford school disctricts. I have also worked with students from private religious schools and home-school children.

My students typically need the most help with reading, writing and math, although I also assist my students with history, science, and health. Most of my elementary work has involved homework help, literacy, test preparation, and developing study skills.

I have worked with gifted students, learning disabled students, students with Asperger's Syndrome, students with Autism, and students with other environmental factors that impeded their learning progress. My main goal as a tutor is to maximize the individual student's potential for self-sufficiency. I use creative strategies to help break down students' barriers to learning, and I try to challenge students to become independently motivated.

I believe that positive reinforcement, rewards, praise, and empathy are the most powerful tools to promote a love of learning. I am known for developing a strong rapport with my students which continues to thrive as they grow and tackle more difficult academic challenges!

I used to work at the ELS Language Center at SUNY Brockport, where I met and worked with students from all over the world. I assisted students with both academic programs and life skills, as well as organizing many events to help them experience American culture. I worked with teachers, host families, college administrators, and local organizations to create a comprehensive experience for students.

I currently tutor students ranging from elementary to PhD candidates, some of whom are international exchange students. I have extensive training in international affiars, history, religion, and culture, and I am familiar with the unique challenges that students from different countries face. My main focus is promoting language acquisition through reading, writing, and interacting with others, as well as using media such as film and television to increase vocabulary and fluency. I am also very creative and friendly, and I try to be a resource for students in all the many areas that study abroad can be challenging.

-11 years of language training

-Lived in La Maison Fran├žaise at Nazareth College, a language-immersive student housing option and cultural center

-Presented numerous papers on French and Francophone topics, including women's issues, post-colonial literature, and the French Revolution

-Worked in the Language Lab at Nazareth, using many different kinds of instructional technology to facilitate students' acquitision of French and other languages

Microsoft Windows

I have over a decade of experience working with Windows, since the days of MS-DOS and Windows 3.1 through Windows 95, 98, 200, XP and Vista. Throughout the years I have learned how to assemble a PC, configure hardware and software, perform maintenance, troubleshoot a host of errors and problems, and configure Internet settings for both LAN and Wifi connections. I have worked with desktops, laptops, servers, personal devices such as PDAs and now tablets, and web-based programs designed to link such devices. I understand the inner workings of a computer as well as a vast array of different software programs, but I am able to explain and share my knowledge with even the most technology-averse of students. Whether it is Microsoft Office, email, Cloud computing, web design, or any other facet of computer use, I can help you master the technology you need to succeed.

I have tutored students from the elementary to adult level in reading for a variety of purposes. My students range from young readers struggling to meet grade expectations to adult students who find the volume and sophistication of college reading material challenging. I tutor both native speakers and ESL/ESOL students, and I work with students with severe learning disabilities as well as students who are accelerated or gifted.

I work with each student to help him or her develop strategies for reading comprehension, retention, and efficient, accurate note-taking. I also push my students to understand not only the content of what they read, but the author's background, bias, and the political, social, and cultural factors that shape any text. I help my students look for connections between the text and their own lives, and I encourage them to use ideas and vocabulary from their reading to enrich their own voices as writers.

I have spent nearly a decade studying world religions. I was raised in a Baptist/Methodist church, and I have a profound understanding of the Bible both as scripture and as a historical text. My studies have covered Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Islam, Hinduism, Taoism, Shintoism, Chinese indigenous religion, Wicca, Paganism, ancient religions of Greece, Rome, Persia and Egypt, Native American religion and the ways in which these religions affect our society today. I have attended religious services for nearly all of these faiths and have taken several college classes about world religions (particularly Eastern) as well as writing papers both criticizing the disadvantages and advocating the positive aspects of religious faith. I can submit samples of my written work in religious studies if needed.

Social Studies

I have many years of experience in Social Studies, including Global History, Geography, AP European History, AP American History, Political Science, Economics, International Law, and Anthropology. I also took courses in Central Asian History and Chinese History, more specifically. I am also knowledgeable about American politics and citizenship, including voting, taxes, the Constitution and Amendments, etc. I have a wide variety of academic tools at my disposal to help your student cement his/her understanding of Social Studies and make a personal connection to this field.

Study Skills

I am well-versed in the development of study skills, from my own personal experiences as well as my tutoring students and my 3 stepchildren. I am able to find creative and engaging ways to tailor a study plan to each individual's needs. I can help your student find what works best to study effectively, including finding a suitable work space, eliminating distractions, rewarding yourself, time management and organization. I can also find and create personalized organizers and planners that fit your student's exact situation, and make studying as enjoyable and possible!

My experience in tutoring writing and working as an editor/proofreader is extensive. I have taught academic writing to students ranging from elementary school to graduate students and Ph.D. candidates. Whether teaching basic spelling, grammar, and punctuation to children or second language learners or helping adult students with research papers or dissertations, I always endeavor to teach self-sufficiency and to preserve the student's unique voice. I have experience with the research and data collection/coding process, business correspondence, creative writing, poetry, literary analysis/critical lens essays, fiction writing, stage writing, and songwriting.
