HI! I am a drummer who specializes in playing jazz music. I am happy to teach many styles of drumming including but not limited to straight-ahead swing, modern jazz, rock, hip hop, RnB, funk, and different Latinamerican styles. I also compose and produce music and am willing and able to teach music theory and ear training, especially as tools to use when learning to work as a composer or songwriter.

I love seeing my students progress and develop their skillsets and I strive to provide educational material that is challenging enough to be engaging but not so challenging that it becomes discouraging. Most importantly, I treat students as individuals rather than using the same "cookie-cutter" approach on everyone I work with.

I graduated from New Mexico State University in 2019 (with honors) with a degree in Classical Percussion Performance, and I am currently pursuing a master's degree in Jazz Studies and Contemporary Media (Drumset Focus) at The Eastman School of Music. I have been teaching music privately since 2016, and as part of my assistantship, I teach the functional jazz drumset class at Eastman. I love music history and am something of a theory nerd, especially when it comes to harmony. Additionally, I have studied a broad field of music under the Western Classical umbrella (ranging from Bach to Xenakis), and a similarly broad range of music from American Popular culture, ranging from Great American Songbook tunes to the music of The Arctic Monkeys.

I love to teach and am happy to work with students of all levels and all ages! Please don't hesitate to reach out with any questions you might have about scheduling and availability.

Music History

I have taken many collegiate music history classes, including a class on early music, a class on common practice period music, two classes (one graduate level) on 20th century music, and two graduate-level courses on jazz history. A big part of my jazz practice is studying the lineage of great jazz drummers through the processes of transcription and deep listening. I also love to look into the history independently.

Music

Drums,

Drums

I have been an active freelance musician since 2015, and have worked as a private teacher since 2016. I have pedagogy classes, worked as a clinician, and taught a collegiate class on basic jazz drumset. I am classically trained and have studied with a number of renowned jazz drummers.
Ear Training,

Ear Training

I took four semesters of aural skills classes as a part of my undergraduate degree. Many of the music history classes I have taken were very listening-heavy and involved deep listening to prepare for tests. A major part of my jazz practice is transcription and I have transcribed dozens of solos by many different musicians.
General Music,

General Music

I have studied snare drum, marimba, vibraphone, timpani, drum set, various auxiliary percussion instruments, piano, and jazz composition. These studies have prepared me to teach general musical skills including but not limited to developing a steady pulse, understanding complex rhythms and time signatures, reading music, matching pitch and identifying intervals, identifying chord qualities by ear, etc.

I've written a number of songs of different styles (jazz, RnB, neo-soul, etc). I'm in the process of producing a solo album. I've studied music theory extensively and have received collegiate education in jazz composition.
