A lifetime of reading
for information and enjoyment has enriched my already well-rounded education in the humanities and professional nursing
. My extensive educational background and teaching skills are well-positioned to advance the scholastic success of a broad range of students needing more proficiency in topics ranging from English literature
to political science
to business writing
. I focus on what works for success in the subject at hand. I discard approaches that do not work. The measure of my success is the student's increasing confidence and success in the classroom.
I really like working with children, including grumpy adolescents. My own mother was a popular high school English teacher who, in 1969, was the first in Maine to introduce daily newspaper reading into the English curriculum. As her children, we six were expected to be award-winning students. Mom was there with us correcting her own students' papers, ready to step in to guide us in the subjects she knew. Homework was ALWAYS done before supper! While we cleaned up after dinner, the whole family would discuss what we'd read in the newspaper, and critique how the news had been reported.
With close attention to written curriculum guidelines, I use a clear, no-nonsense approach to learning, adapting my approaches for those who are gifted, differently abled, and coping with learning disabilities. Over my strenuous objections, my own son's ADHD
and decoding disabilities were dismissed by his teachers until fourth grade
! I worked closely with each of his schools' educational specialists and with his after-school tutors to draft IEPs that broadened his executive skills while addressing his fixed disability. I insisted they remain respectful, and that they teach to his strengths while recognizing his frustration with written materials. I read the newspaper to him every afternoon even into his teens until he was able to keep up with outside reading on his own. With proper teaching modifications and interventions, firm guidance from me, and identification of his maturing needs, my son graduated high school with honors.
I have recent experience in classroom teaching and tutoring of adult students as well, a large number of whom have been non-native English speakers. I appreciate the difficulties that ESL
students face every day, both in the classroom and at the kitchen table as they struggle to complete homework assignments. With a broad background in nursing practice and recent nursing education, I am qualified to tutor nursing students in fundamentals, nursing mathematics
, mental health, community health, pediatrics, med-surg, geriatrics, informatics, electronic medical records, quality assurance, nutrition
, and pharmacology
. I have organized, encouraged, supported and tutored study groups focusing on ESL, nursing math
and exam reviews. I have helped many students do well on standardized tests, especially the PN and RN NCLEX
nursing licensure exams.
Together we will assess and discuss your or your child's learning needs, and plan how best to address your learning objectives. I will conduct periodic progress evaluations, and adjust the pace and vary my strategies until we tune in to the channels that pay off.
