Greetings, students! I hope that we'll get to know each other and that I'll be able to help you achieve your academic goals. But for now let me tell you a bit about myself. I have been tutoring and teaching for 17 years, both in person and online, working with a wide range of students of all ages and academic levels, from five-year-olds to adults. I have a B.A. in Latin, and my specialties are Latin and Ancient Greek, but I also have extensive experience tutoring students in a variety of other subjects, including Basic Math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2, Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, College Algebra, English, Writing, German, Geology, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, and History. No matter the subject, I strive to be highly responsive to the students I teach, communicating the subject to them in a way that they can understand. This often involves breaking things down into a series of steps that the student can refer to and apply when he or she is solving math problems or translating a language. For many subjects, like history and the sciences, where memorization of terms, lists, or formulas is essential, I help students come up with and apply mnemonic devices. But whatever the subject, my goal is always to meet the student where he or she is and to provide that student with the tools to succeed.
I have for thirteen years now taught Latin and Ancient Greek over Skype through my own company, Carmenta Online Latin Tutors. I am the author of a Conversational Latin textbook, which I wrote so that Carmenta's teachers and any other Latin teachers who chose to use it would be able to integrate Conversational Latin into their Latin classes, even if they had very limited experience with spoken Latin. My own education in Latin has made it clear to me that a rigorous understanding of Latin grammar and translation along with consistent conversational practice are essential for success in learning the language, and I have worked to pass this understanding on to my students.
