Holy Cross (Physics)
I am an experienced high school teacher who has tutored students (both high school and college) who have attended multiple school districts in the state of Rhode Island as well as private schools. I have a Bachelors degree in Physics from Holy Cross with a concentration in Pre-Medical studies. I chose to go into teaching rather than attending medical school for the simple reason of connecting and educating students.
I am currently entering my 20th year of teaching high school. For the past 15 years I have been a member of the North Kingstown High School Science department, of which I am the Department Chairperson and Engineering Curriculum Coordinator. I also taught for 5 years at Austin Preparatory School, a co-ed, Catholic High School in Reading, Massachusetts. My teaching experience includes Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, and Robotics.
My philosophy in tutoring is to try to get to know a student and what it takes for them to understand the topics at hand, understanding that this may change from course to course or topic to topic. From there I aim to have students personalize the concepts while understanding the "why's" rather than the "what's". I feel that this method will make a student understand the principles and be able to apply them to different themes and topics within a course.
I am available for tutoring during after school and evening hours. We highly recommend Richard as a physics tutor! He starts by actually getting to know the student and understanding how they learn best, and then he tailors a tutoring program that is customized for each student. He is very easy to work with, flexible with scheduling, accessible, patient, and responsive. Rick has tutored our son as a sophomore and junior in high school where he has been enrolled in Honors and International Baccalaureate level math and physics classes. With Rick's tutoring, he has achieved A's and B's in these advanced classes, and because of his strong academic results, our son was recently honored as a 2015 Rhode Island Scholar Athlete and also received Academic All State recognition. Many thanks to Rick for his support!
Works great with my HS sophomore who is taking AP Physics. She wanted to work with someone who would take her a higher level of understanding.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
