Who can give you a sign name?
Can anyone give a sign name? Can you give it to yourself?

Receiving an ASL sign name from a Deaf person is a cherished moment! As sign names are particular to ASL and the Deaf community, they should only be given by a Deaf ASL-user who knows you well. Typically, we incorporate aspects of your appearance that are easily recognizable, and sometimes guided by your personality or other features. A sign name should not be self-created, given by hearing ASL users, or from people who don't know you. You also have the freedom to decide whether or not you want to accept the sign name, and sometimes you may be given different ones over the years as your appearance changes or your personality grows. As someone who is culturally Deaf (Hard of Hearing), I'm happy to help others learn more about my language and culture!

Only a Deaf person can give you a sign name. It’s a meaningful part of Deaf culture and usually reflects your personality, a unique trait, or something special about you. Receiving a sign name is a sign of respect and connection—it means you’re recognized and accepted by the Deaf community. Until then, fingerspelling your name is the appropriate and respectful way to introduce yourself.
