Martha bought 1 soft drink for $3.00. She bought 4 candy bars, but we don't know how much they cost so lets say "x" represents the cost of the candy bars. She spent $11.00 in total.
First, lets set up an equation. We can multiply the cost of the item by the number of items purchased to get the total price.
1(3) + 4(x) = 11 or 3 + 4x = 11
Now that we have an equation, we want to solve for x. We will start by subtracting 3 from both sides. That would give us 4x = 8. Now we can divide both sides by 4 to get x = 2.
Lets plug 2 back into our equation to check our work.
1(3) + 4(2) = 11
3 + 8 = 11
11 = 11
That works, so we know that each candy bar costs $2.00.
