Belting is a vocal technique where higher notes are sung with a strong, speech-like quality rather than a light or airy sound. It’s often overcomplicated, but at its core, belting should feel similar to your speaking voice and never forced or strained. When working on a belt that feels difficult, I often have students try saying “hey taxi!” at a confident volume while imagining their voice carrying forward to the wall in front of them. This helps connect the sound to a natural, healthy place instead of pushing.
