Yes, variation exists in ASL just like spoken languages. There are several factors that cause sign variations. They are:
- Regional - for example the sign for HOSPITAL is different in New York than the rest of the U. S.
- Age
- Gender - males tend to sign at lower locations (or non-citation form) while females tend to sign at higher locations (citation forms). Females also tend to use more pronouns.
- Ethnicity
Obviously, if a sign has variation, there is no right or wrong one to use. However, consider these two things when deciding which variation of a sign to use:
1. Your region
2. Your teacher.
