What is a good method for starting to play the violin?

Many people wonder what a good way to begin playing the violin is. Should I start by reading music, by copying somebody online, or just experimenting? Should I use the Suzuki method?

The best method for learning the violin is the Suzuki method. This approach starts with basics like holding and bowing the instrument's open strings with a controlled sound, then moving onto simple songs like "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" which are very easy to play on the violin. We also read along with the written music while playing this song. This method emphasizes Ear Training, and also helps you read notes. all while working on perfect violin technique.

The Suzuki method is how most students nowadays are taught to play the violin, and famous violinists like Hillary Hahn and Joshua Bell teach and learned Suzuki.

Method can refer to ways of teaching violin, like the Suzuki and Galamian ones. There are many methods developed by great teachers. In fact, each violin teacher develops his/her own approach based on experience, both as a student and a teacher. Just as students vary in learning style, teachers vary in teaching style. The key is finding a teacher whose approach matches the student's needs and goals. It may require both patience and trial and error to find a good fit.

Method can also refer to a series of books used for instruction, not to be confused with teaching method. For example, I'm not a certified Suzuki teacher, but often teach my students from the Suzuki books. Method books usually teach the same things, although the approach can vary. Effective teachers use method books as tools to guide student practice. When a new student already has a method book, I usually continue with it and supplement as needed. If a student comes without one, I suggest one or more books, based on what seems best suited to their goals and learning style.

Reaching out to tutors like me for consultation is a great start; otherwise, the Galamian method is the simplest approach in my opinion. Otherwise, as my colleagues mentioned, Suzuki can be another option.

I agree with the Suzuki method. If you're learning on a low budget don't worry and use youtube. If you'd like you can look for a tutor. Youtube is a very good source. You can learn how to read music on there and when the need for sheet music arises use IMSLP. Definitely look at some scales, because these will do incredible things for you. But overall I'd suggest Suzuki, Youtube, Scales, and a tutor if possible.
