What's the difference between phonics and phonological awareness ?

Phonological awareness is listening without letters to count, say or manipulate syllables, onset and rime and phonemes; etc. Phonics is connecting sounds and letters.

Phonological awareness involves use of the ears only. It can be taught in the dark. Rhyming along with Segmenting and blending sounds(phonemes) develops phonological awareness. It lays a more firm foundation for phonics which is a more abstract skill. One attaches a sound to a visual graphic ie. a letter. In phonics, one must use eyes to see the the letter and learn the associated sound.
