A way of obtaining a better understanding of the origins of American slavery may date back to Queen Isabella I and her husband Ferdinand II. They supported and paid for Christopher Columbus' 1492 voyage to the New World. "Isabella and her husband had created an empire and in later years were consumed with administration and politics; they were concerned with the succession and worked to link the Spanish crown to the other rulers in Europe." King Henry VIII (1491-1547) and his daughter Queen Elizabeth I of England might be classified as "the other rulers in Europe," whom Isabella and Ferdinand, later trusted to explore the New World.09/23/20
